So the day has arrived. I think everyone but the kids were nervous, I know I was but it has to said that our boys were extremely positive without being cocky and were totally up for what was for some of our lads, a bit of a grudge match(meant in the nicest possible way of course) Our U13s were born out of the old Chasetown Colts with 5 or 6 of our boys joining and the rest, it appears are now part of the Norton Canes set up, so lots of school bragging rights at stake.
Enough about the history, it was all about the new season and the boys.
Norton won the toss and kicked off, MSA were very quick to close down the ball and take control of the situation giving Norton no time at all to settle on the ball. The odd occasions that the ball came across the halfway line, our defenders dealt with it with relative ease. The first real chance fell to Billy Edwards(son of gaffer) whose shot from close range was saved by the keeper, next up was Mozza who received a ball from Billy Edwards(Son Of) but his cross come shot went wide of the post.Norton managed to get into our half and had a half shot that didn’t trouble Ted Calver in the MSA goal. with the ball finding its way to the other end rather sharply,Tom Evans latched on to a loose ball but could only manage a half shot that was saved again. Then, a foul on the left hand side of the box gave MSA a freekick,Tom Evans lined the ball up and released a sweet right foot shot high into the top of the Norton net, 1-0 to MSA and to be fair it had been coming. Now the boys were hungry and when Mozza ran down the right(as he did all afternoon with ease and confidence)and crossed in a sweet ball for Billy Edwards, it was just too high for Bill whose header went just over. Tom Evans ,then latched on to a through ball and got tackled ,the ball ran loose to Vinnie who smashed the ball into the Norton net, 2-0 to MSA and in control. The remainder of the half was controlled by us,Norton offering little and when they did ,it was easily dealt with.
Half Time MSA 2-0 NORTON CANES
MSA kicked off the second half, hoping to keep up the momentum but its fair to say that Norton had come out with other ideas, pressing forward more but not really with any menace, but there pressure paid off when a cross from the right was turned into the MSA net,an unfortunate own goal. That little bit of complacency seemed to do the trick though because from the kick off, the ball went right up to the Norton end where it was put out for a corner,Mozza crossing a super ball into the box and Fraser Dunn making no mistake with a free header, 3-1 and normal service was resumed. Norton were being overrun in midfield and that pressure was priceless. Soon after, Mozza chased a ball that was destined for a goal kick but somehow managed to not only get to the ball but deliver a perfect cross that Tom Evans duly obliged by smashing the back of the net,4-1 to MSA.
Norton were not giving up though and a decent corner that was cleared only as far as the Norton player whose shot forced Ted in goal to make an excellent save. Norton then had a freekick that was over and wide.Back up the other end Ollie had a shot that was wide of the post but from the resulting goalkick we won the ball,Ollie once again letting one go from the edge of the box,the keeper parried straight into the path of the advancing Tom Evans who smashed in to make it 5-1 and complete his hattrick. Norton Pulled another goal back to make it 5-2 and that was indeed the final score
MSA 5-2 NORTON CANES
Wow, what a fantastic start to the season, the discipline was excellent, each and every player gave 110%. No moaning at being subbed and total commitment when called upon. A credit to themselves, their parents and Midland Soccer Academy. Even the sausage rolls were in attendance today, warm and succulent, mmmmmmmmm. Big Respec to Steve Lee for crowd control, very professional and forceful throughout, lol.
we know that every game wont be the same but if the boys show this sort of commitmet week in week out then we really cant ask for more. A special mention to Jack Mozza Morris for winning the parents Man of the Match with a tireless performance on the wing and the Coaches Man of the Match Vinnie Lee who was just solid, barely putting a foot wrong.
Im not gonna mention everyone by name because im still learning them all, but take it from everyone watching,”you were all men of the match today
